Globe Life Field Information
Globe Life Field is a baseball stadium located in Arlington, Texas. Its retractable roof is one of its more prominent features. And currently it is the home ballpark of MLB’s Texas Rangers team. The stadium name comes from a naming rights deal with Globe Life and Accident Insurance Company that is set to run through 2048.
History
The idea for the venue came on May 20, 2016, when the Texas Rangers announced that they would be vacating their old home, Choctaw Stadium. The intent was to create a new home stadium that would be built in a public/private partnership and to feature a retractable roof.
The ballpark was approved on the following Election Day with HKS, Inc. announced as the architect on January 5, 2017.
The reason for the retractable roof lies in the weather of Arlington, which was prone to high temperatures and frequent rain. So while many baseball fans enjoy sunny outdoor games, it was decided that a retractable roof would limit rain-outs and enhance the comfort of visitors during their stay.
There was some controversy with the new stadium plans. While fans appreciated being able to enjoy their local baseball heroes in a more comfortable setting, the cost to build the stadium extended existing taxes used to pay for AT&T stadium. But despite these criticisms, plans were approved and underway.
Opening
Originally, Globe Life Field was set to open to fans on March 23, 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed these plans for several months. The field was finally opened for a high-school graduation on May 29, 2020. And the Rangers first regular-season game followed on July 24, 2020. The Rangers then went on to play two exhibition games against the Rockies on July 21 and 22 at Globe Life Field.
